Gekozen omdat ik veel wou reizen. Beste klasgenoten die ik ooit heb gehad: avonturiers, vrijbuiters, feestvierders. Hoogtepunt was veldwerk in de Provence - ben daarna nog gaan liften naar Monaco en de trein terug gepakt naar Parijs waar ik 3 dagen op banken heb geslapen om de stad te kunnen zien zonder geld op zak. Ik begon de studie twijfelend of ik de onderwerpen nu wel zo interresant zou vinden, en vond tot mijn verbazing een liefde voor stenen. Andere onderwerpen vond ik ook interessant om te studeren - maar helaas, ik kwam tot de ontdekking dat ik geen talent had om het grote beeld te doorzien tijdens veldwerk. Na propedeuse jaar besloot ik met tegenzin om naar een andere studie te zoeken.

Earth Sciences.
Earth Sciences. New York, the Big Apple! A sigh of relief after being burned out studying Physics. Enroling in the Department of Earth Sciences was the easiest way to get a fellowship at the Goddard Institute of Space Studies (NASA/GISS) to study climate change. But resuming classes in geology was also a treasure. Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography, and Climate Dynamics were a welcome change from Statistical Mechanics and Electrodynamics. Seeing a direct link between my study and the world around me was also much appreciated as opposed to elusive quarks and bosons. Space, Geology, and Climate Change: it all came together now. And being surrounded by 700 students from more than 100 countries during my stay at International House did not hurt my social life either. I-House provided me the opportunity to blossom: here I met most of my current friends (still get together with Yonatan+company on a regular basis for heated late-night discussions, pool and/or poker games fueled by drinks and laughter), shared my love with a number of special ladies (but saved my heart for the best of them: my wife Liz), engaged in extracurricular activities (security, student council, and best of all: bartender), and got exposed to extraordinary dignitaries (meeting Nelson Mandela was truly a humbling experience). After my studies, I continued working at Columbia University and NASA/GISS on analyzing spaceborne data of the Earth for climate studies. In 2005 we got exciting news that our satellite, the Glory mission, had been approved for launch in 2008. Being now part of a science team for a space mission is something I still have to pinch myself to believe it....

Natuur- en Sterrenkunde.
Natuur- en Sterrenkunde. Oorspronkelijk bedoeld als een tussenstation naar Geophysica, maar ik heb die stap nooit doorgevoerd. Niet makkelijke tijd gehad, vooral na mijn jaar in Geologie. Wel gefascineerd door quantum mechanica en sterrenkunde. Goede tijd in de sterrenkunde groep van Prof. Hovenier doorgebracht. Erg dankbaar voor de goede leiding (en geduld!) van Hovenier, de Haan, en Dolman.
